CHOCOLATE CHIP BROWNIE INGREDIENTS

  • Melted Butter
  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Eggs
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

Brownies are an extremely simple dessert to make and, luckily, they require only easy-to-find baking ingredients.

A chocolate brownie recipe can be broken up into three simple categories: The dry ingredients, the wet ingredients, and the add-ins. When baking, you should always start with the dry ingredients first, as eggs and sugar should not be combined until toward the end of the assembly process.

DRY INGREDIENTS

Some brownie recipes will call for melting down chopped chocolate with butter, but for simplicities-sake and a little time management, we are going to use cocoa powder instead. However, if you really want to do things the old-fashioned way, here is a festive brownie recipe from the TAK archives that uses that method.

The dry ingredients for brownies consists of all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

WET INGREDIENTS

Sugar may not at first seem like a wet ingredient, however, when sugar melts, it takes on a liquid form. Therefore, to the wet ingredientscategory it goes. The wet ingredients for brownies are as follows: Granulated sugar, eggs, unsalted butter, and pure vanilla extract.

See? Simple as could be, but let's just note two important things here: (1) when a recipe calls for unsalted butter, do not try to substitute salted butter, and (2) pure vanilla extract is much better quality than imitation vanilla, and is well-worth the extra dollar or so in price difference.

HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE CHIP BROWNIES

There aren't many desserts out there that are just as easy to make by hand than by using electric mixers, but brownies most definitely are. All you need for this chocolate brownie recipe is a good, sturdy wooden spoon, a whisk, a couple of mixing bowls, and some measuring utensils.

  1. Melt the butter.
  2. Whisk together dry ingredients.
  3. Mix wet ingredients and stir in butter.
  4. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, stir, then add chocolate chips.
  5. Bake and cool.

The butter is melted in a microwave safe dish (or on the stovetop) and set aside to cool. Then, the dry ingredients are whisked together and set aside. The sugar, eggs, and vanilla are whisked together, and the butter is slowly drizzled (whisking all the while) into the wet ingredients. In goes the dry ingredients and it's time for that sturdy spoon.

As soon as the mixture begins to come together and all of the dry ingredients appear to have been absorbed into the wet ingredients, stop mixing. You do not want to over-develop the gluten. This will help to keep your brownies tender. Lastly, if you'll kindly recall the third category for our brownie ingredients, it's time for those "add-ins."

"Add-in's" are ingredients like chocolate chips, candies, sprinkles, nuts, etc... for this Chocolate Chip Brownie Recipe, semi-sweet chocolate chips it is. Not only do they add more chocolate to a chocolate lover's favorite dessert, they add a pleasing differentiation in texture as well. The chocolate chips tend to firm back up after melting and stay suspended all throughout the brownie, and it is absolutely heavenly.

All that's left now is to bake them up and eat them up. Such a wonderful world we live in, isn't it?

FAQs

Why is my chocolate brownie chewy? ›

The Fat in Chewy Brownies

With any cocoa powder-based brownie recipe, we need quite a bit of fat to prevent the cocoa powder from drying the brownies out and making them crumbly. In box mix brownies, the combination of saturated (solid) fats and unsaturated (liquid) fats creates that chewy texture.

How do you present brownies on a plate? ›

Suggestions for Serving Brownies

Drizzle chocolate syrup and raspberry sauce on a dessert plate. Cut brownies with a heart-shaped cookie cutter and place one in the center of the plate. Decorate the heart with piped whipped cream.

How to pimp brownies? ›

Crushed potato chips, pretzels, and salted nuts stirred in or sprinkled on before baking can add textural interest, plus a little savoriness that can make the rich chocolate flavor more pronounced. A shower of sea salt or flaky salt like Maldon over baked brownies before slicing makes for a dramatic, sparkly finish.

Why are my brownies breaking? ›

WELL, most likely you just over-whisked your brownie mix. The only step that should be whisked with an electric beater is the eggs, everything else is best done by hand. This prevents the brownie from gaining too many air bubbles, aerating in the oven and then collapsing back down.

Is melted butter better than softened butter for brownies? ›

If you want a fudgy chocolate brownie, use melted butter. For cakey brownies, beating softened butter and sugar together to create air pockets will make your brownies lighter and cakier.

What makes brownies fudgy instead of cakey? ›

Fudgy brownies have a higher fat-to-flour ratio than cakey ones. So add more fat—in this case, butter and chocolate. A cakey batch has more flour and relies on baking powder for leavening. The amount of sugar and eggs does not change whether you're going fudgy or cakey.

Do you bake brownies on the top or bottom rack? ›

Middle. The default position. It's ideal for most foods since it situates the item in the middle of the oven, allowing the hot air to circulate evenly around the food, resulting in even cooking. Use this for a single tray of cookies, sheet-pan dinners, fish, brownies, banana bread, and so on.

Do you butter the pan for brownies? ›

Preparing the Pan

Be sure to select a light-colored, shiny pan, which will conduct heat evenly. Glass or dark-colored pans can cause the edges to overbake or even burn. Always grease the pan thoroughly with shortening, softened butter, or cooking spray. (Do this even if the recipe doesn't specify.)

Do you use a whisk or spatula for brownies? ›

The Secret to Better Brownies: You Must Whip It. It's hard to make brownies that are truly bad. But to get the very best brownies, break out that whisk and start whipping.

What happens when you add an extra egg to brownie mix? ›

What happens if you use milk instead of water in brownie mix? ›

One change is to use milk or heavy cream instead of water. This change will make brownies more moist and gooey since milk is more fatty and flavorful than water. A second change is to use butter instead of oil. For similar reasons to using milk, butter adds a rich and more decadent quality to the batter.

Is it better to cut brownies hot or cold? ›

The single most important step in cutting brownies cleanly is to be sure they are completely cooled before you attempt to cut them. We have methods that will give you perfect brownies but none of them will work if you're impatient and cut hot or even warm brownies.

Should you chill brownie batter before baking? ›

Should you put brownies in the fridge after baking? ›

Do Brownies Need to Be Refrigerated? Brownies don't need to be refrigerated, but they'll hold up a few more days if they are. Unless your brownies include more perishable ingredients like fresh fruit or cream cheese frosting, they'll be fine at room temperature as long as they're stored in an airtight container.

How do you keep brownies soft and chewy? ›

Use parchment paper to layer brownies into an airtight container for best results. Tip: When storing brownies in an airtight container, add a slice of bread in with them. The moisture from the bread will help keep your brownies fresh and soft for a couple more days.

Why are my brownies rubbery? ›

What is the difference between chewy and fudgy brownies? ›

Are brownies supposed to be chewy in the middle? ›

If the brownies still look wet or aren't pulling away, they aren't done. Even fudgy brownies will pull from the edges once they've finished baking. You'll see that the edges look dry while the middle still looks soft or slightly wet. Chewy and cakey brownies will have dry edges with firmer-looking centers.
