When I was growing up, my mom used to give me apple slices with a small bowl of brown sugar to dip them into. I think my husband would flip out if he saw me giving our girls a bowl of sugar each, but it was different times, and it was truly delicious! (Not that you’ll ever go wrong in the eyes of a child if you give them a bowl of sugar!)

This apple dip recipe reminds me of those times when I was little. It’s 3 simple ingredients and it’s delicious. You can add Skor bits, or you can add nuts, but the simple ingredients on their own make it taste like caramel without complicating things.

(I just took a break to get up and slice myself some apples to go with the leftover apple dip. These photos were driving me nuts and they motivated me to get a snack! I’m happy to report that it’s still delicious 3 days after making it.)

This dip makes apples taste even better and makes for a super fun family snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 package of cream cheese softened (8 oz)
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

I left the cream cheese on the counter for several hours so it was definitely a soft consistency, but it still took a bit of work to get everything to mix together smoothly.

Eventually I resorted to using the whisk to get it completely smooth:

I’m a pretty big fan of my apple slicer (which makes a great gift by the way if you know someone who needs one!). It’s so easy to get perfectly shaped apple slices with next to no effort. (You’ll see below what I was planning with my apple slices).

With the apple slicer, you push down, and voila, perfectly sliced apples!

If you aren’t going to be serving your apples right away, toss them into a Ziploc freezer bagOld Fashioned Apple Dip Recipe (9) and coat them with a little bit of lemon juiceOld Fashioned Apple Dip Recipe (10). That way they won’t go brown and look unappetizing if they are going to be sitting out for a little while.

Canadian Thanksgiving is long past and I’ve nearly missed out on American Thanksgiving too, but this is the whole reason I made apple dip to begin with:

How cute is this turkey made from apples and dip? I used three different apple colours and set them all up around the dip, using a candy corn piece as the beak and chocolate chips and the eyes. I’ll have to remember this for next year. Hopefully I won’t be so late making it next time!

The apple dip is so simple, but it’s so delicious! The brown sugar and vanilla extract make it taste very similar to caramel.

It’s a great snack or you could even use it as an appetizer. I don’t think I’ve ever served fruit as an appetizer? But it would look beautiful set up on a nice platter and would go together wonderfully with a gourmet cheese tray. And seeing that it’s delicious, I’m pretty sure you can’t go wrong!

I’m a little bit worried I may never want to eat an apple on it’s own ever again after trying this dip!

Of course, apples don’t “need” to be dipped in anything. But then again, neither do potato chips, or vegetables for that matter! It just makes them that much better and makes for a fun family snack. Oh, and if you aren’t going to serve a bowl of sugar with your apples, at least sprinkle some brown sugar on top of the dip before serving. There, just like from my childhood.

Your photos are gorgeous and the dip sounds delicious. I am allergic to apples (of all things) but it would be delicious with pears too!! Thanks for sharing on the Four Seasons Blog Hop!

Wow, apples definitely are a strange thing to be allergic to! It would be great for any other fruit too though. I bet strawberries, bananas or as you said pears would taste amazing!

Oh man. That sounds so good! I found this one in the Pin It Party, too! I love apples in a sweet fruit dip. I gotta try this. It looks way too easy. And the lemon juice … does that actually work? For how long? I haven’t ever tried it because I generally eat the apple right away. Thanks for sharing! I’m going to pin this one!

The lemon juice actually worked for a surprisingly long time! I cut up all the apples for these photos, added lemon juice, put them in the fridge and took them in my lunch the next day and they were still fine. Not that I’d recommend doing that if you are serving them, since they ended up going a little soggy, but they should definitely last several hours no problem!

Love this dip! I know this was posted some time ago, but since it’s apple season right now I wanted to share my favorite way to keep apples crisp & from turning brown (without any bitterness). Put apples into a container, cover with any lemon lime soda and let sit for at least 10 minutes. I’ve kept them overnight before in the fridge this way for Thanksgiving. Worked perfectly. You can set them out for hours without them turning brown or losing their crunch. Thanks for sharing this great recipe! 🙂
