Why You’ll Love This Mug Recipe

  • Minimal Ingredients: You only need three items to make this quick microwave cake recipe.
  • Perfect Sweet Fix: I’m PICKY about my mug cakes, and this is by far one of my favorites.
  • Family Favorite Recipe: My boys beg for this as an after dinner treat.

Have you seen the viral Oreo and milk mug cake floating around the web? The claim was that you can combine crushed cookies with milk and heat in the microwave for a cake- ready in minutes. Too good to be true? Nope. It’s real and it is DELICIOUS.

This recipe was incredibly surprising for so many reasons. I expected the texture to be off, but it was surprisingly light (or lighter than I’d planned for). I did add the extra ingredient of baking powder to get more cake like vs dense and chewy- Which worked beautifully. If you want a super fast cake treat, but don’t want to turn on the oven, this is for you.

Inspired by the viral TikTok recipe, with a minor adjustment. You have to give this one a try!

Oreo Microwave Cake Ingredients

If you are new to the world of mug cakes. this is the perfect recipe to start with. It’s impossible to mess up and gives you a good chocolate flavor. Ready in about 2 minutes, you just can’t help but give it a try. Here is what you need:

  • Oreo Cookies– So far we have only tried them with the classic chocolate flavor, but we look forward to using some of their more seasonal flavors as well.
  • Baking Powder: I have made with and without baking powder. With gives the texture a nice little change that makes it 100% worth it.
  • Milk– Try not to use anything under 2%

TIP: For a good cake texture you really need to blend the cookies into a powder. I use a high powered blender (affiliate) or my food processor (affiliate).

How to Make Oreo Mug Cake in the Microwave

Our microwave is 950 watts. A higher wattage microwave will take less time to cook. If yours is a lower wattage you may need to add additional 30 seconds to 1 minute.

If you are unsure, I always suggest starting with a lower time and adjusting from there.

  1. PREP: Mist the inside of a mug with baking spray. This is going to help keep the cake from sticking to the sides and make it more enjoyable to eat. Set the mug aside.
  2. COOKIES: Blend or process the oreo cookies until fine crumbs.
  3. MIX: Stir the crumbs, baking powder, and milk into the prepared mug c*ntil combined.
  4. COOK: Heat in the microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds.
  5. ENJOY: Cool 1 minute and enjoy.

TIP: The cooking time may vary depending on the microwave wattage.

Helpful Tools

  • Blender or Food Processor: The secret to making this single serve cake is to crush the cookies finely. I suggest using a food processor (affiliate) or a high powered blender (affiliate). You want them to be almost like a powder.
  • Mug: This recipe doesn’t need anything fancy, you can actually use almost any mug. But I really love thismug set(affiliate).
  • Mini Whisk: Mixing the batter fully is key to a good cake. I love thesemini whisks(affiliate). I also use them for hot chocolate, carnation, and even whipping eggs for scrambles.

Recipe Notes:

Can I use any flavor of Oreo cookies for this mug cake?

Absolutely! Feel free to experiment with different Oreo flavors to create your perfect mug cake.

Can I make this mug cake without baking powder?

While baking powder helps the mug cake rise, you can try omitting it for a denser texture, though it might not be as fluffy.

What size mug do I need for a mug cake?

Regular sized mugs will work great for this recipe. However, if you want to double the recipe I recommend cooking them both separately.

Can I double the recipe to make a larger mug cake?

Yes, you can double the ingredients, but ensure you use a larger microwave-safe container to accommodate the increased volume.

Why did my mug cake burn?

It is incredibly important to check the wattage of your microwave and adjust the cooking time accordingly. Our microwave is 950 watts. A higher wattage microwave will take less time to cook. If yours is a lower wattage you may need to add additional 30 seconds to 1 minute.
If you are unsure, I always suggest starting with a lower time and adjusting from there.

Worked great, good texture and overall pretty good exept for taste. It was a little bland so I would put like vanilla extract and/or sugar or something in it to get a bit more flavor. Or just eat it with something like ice cream. I dunno. But yeah, improve the flavor of it and I think it would be the perfect quick desert.

Hi Anas, I’m sorry that happened. Do you happen to know what wattage you have on your microwave? In the notes of the recipe it mentions maybe needing less time for higher wattage.

So I made this, followed the recipe, yet the cake didn’t rise. I’m pretty sure my microwave has a higher wattage, yet putting it in there for 2 minutes total (split up to check) it only turned out gummy, like I ate a warm gummy from a car in 106 degree weather, so it wasn’t cooking through. I did use a pack of mini Oreos because it seemed like a pretty close ratio, but I don’t know if I did anything wrong or if this is how it’s supposed to turn out.

this is a keeper! I’ve tried so many other recipes that just didn’t work. this oreo mug cake worked like a charm. I don’t think I ground the cookies up enough though, because it was a little gritty, but the end result was delicious, moist, and chocolatey. I used mint oreos and substituted half and half for the milk. thank you thank you thank you
